Introducing: Painted Wolves: A Wild Dog's Life

A beautiful book by Nicholas Dyer and Peter Blinston

The painted wolf (Lycaon pictus, aka the African wild dog) is a unique and remarkable creature. On the one hand it is Africa’s most successful predator, yet on the other it is an incredibly social animal, caring deeply for its family’s wellbeing in a tightly knit pack.

Yet for the last century, the painted wolf has endured an outrageous onslaught, which has seen their numbers decrease from 500,000 a hundred years ago to only 6,500 today. This 99% reduction in their population has put the wolf ’s survival on a knife edge.

Painted Wolves: A Wild Dog’s Life is their story. It is told with insight and passion from two people who know them well, each with their own unique perspective on this endearing animal.

The Painted Wolf Foundation

The painted wolf, also known as wild dog and painted dog, is Africa’s most persecuted predator. It is also its most elusive and enigmatic. Few people know it exists, even fewer care.

Two remarkable people do care and have launched a major campaign to raise global awareness of the species and its plight. For six years, wildlife photographer and author Nicholas Dyer has been tracking and photographing the painted wolves on foot in the Zambezi Valley. For twenty years, conservationist Peter Blinston has been doing all he can to save them from extinction.

About The Authors

Nicholas Dyer Nick grew up in Kenya and always had a passion for photography. After careers in finance and marketing, stuck behind a desk in London, he took the decision to return to Africa and turn his life around to dedicate it to photography, writing and wildlife conservation. He discovered the wild dogs of Mana Pools National Park, fell in love with them and has spent much of the last five years living in a tent while following and photographing three packs on foot.

Peter Blinston Peter fell in love with African wild dogs while watching documentaries in his native England. He volunteered for Painted Dog Conservation from home in England for two years and then initially moved to Zimbabwe as an unpaid six-month volunteer. He has now been there for 20 years and serves as Managing Director. Peter has helped translate the initial vision for PDC into effective programs that have made a significant difference to the survival of the species.

"Just received my copy of Painted Wolves here in the US... it arrived in perfect condition! Your book is a masterpiece! Absolutely stunning in every way... the photos are vibrant in capturing the joy of their play and the focus of their hunt... some shots are so intimate and expressive, I felt drawn deep into the very center of the pack’s family life! The written stories and information are brilliant as well. As one who has spent many hours with Wild Dogs (in Botswana), I can say Painted Wolves is a treasure! And, a wonderful way to give to a great organization, too! Thank you!" ~ Carolyn

“I bought this book for my wife’s birthday, after painted wolves topped her memories on safari. As if by magic it arrived on the Friday afternoon - for her birthday today (Sunday). I never imagined just how special and spectacular a book it would be - blown away by the pictures, the stories and the quality. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the team who put together such a perfect project, and for your wonderful work in the field.” ~ Richard

“I have just finished reading every word and gazing at every photo of this amazing book. Their ambition was a ground breaking book - it is certainly that and so much more. Both Peter’s and Nick’s writing styles are perfect and through their words and Nick’s amazing photos, I have felt I was with them on every page. As a result I have grinned, laughed out loud, welled up, felt angry, felt very sad and also shed tears, but also felt hope” ~ Mary
